Editorial - Wendy O'Hanlon
IT'S
being billed as the biggest street festival the Sunshine Coast has ever seen
and with 11 hours of entertainment in store, the 30th annual Yandina Street
Festival is sure draw the crowds on Sunday, August 17. History will be in
the making on that day as the hinterland town stages the Sunshine Coast's
oldest festival event. For 30 years, the main streets of Yandina have closed
for the one-day event that spotlights the variety of talent in the region
from community and school groups to musicians, dancers and fashion designers.
The festival kicks off at 11am and runs until 7pm with three stages
of entertainment, street performers, stalls galore, sideshow rides, an historical
display and a massive fireworks display. Plus, a colourful and free series
of art, music and craft workshops will be run at Yandina Community Centre
for the two weeks leading up to the festival.
Festival spokesperson, Wendy O'Hanlon, said the festival committee,
under the umbrella of the Yandina Chamber of Commerce, was extremely excited
about the event's 30th birthday and had chosen the theme 'Let's Celebrate'
to do that just.
"It's a tremendous credit to the community spirit of this hinterland
region to have worked hard for 30 long years to keep this festival not only
going, but growing," Ms O'Hanlon said. "This year will be our biggest
yet." "We are currently putting together
a commemorative publication to celebrate our 30 years and welcome anyone with
old photographs or anecdotes to contact us with their stories. Just
call 0432 242 806 or 0438 149 814."
Entertainment highlights on the day include festival stalwarts, Uncle
Bob's Jug Band performing with the Sunshine Coast's own 'Big Bob'- Mayor Bob
